Classic Patty Melts 🥪
A diner icon of beef, deeply caramelized onions, and Swiss cheese griddled between buttery slices of toasted bread.
Ingredients (serves 4)
- 1.25 lbs ground beef
- 2 onions
- 8 slices bread
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper

Thinly slice the onions. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a 12-inch skillet over medium heat and cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until deep golden, about 18 minutes.

Mix the Worcestershire, salt, and pepper into the beef and shape into 4 oval patties sized to your bread.

Push the onions aside and cook the patties over medium-high heat, 3 minutes per side, then remove everything from the pan.

Butter one side of each bread slice. Build sandwiches butter side out with Swiss, patty, onions, more Swiss, and the top slice.

Griddle the melts over medium heat, 3 minutes per side, pressing gently until golden and the cheese is fully melted.
