Ingredients (serves 4)

  • 1.25 lbs ground lamb
  • 1 onion
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 tbsp ginger
  • 0.5 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 0.5 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 cup canned tomatoes
  • 0.5 cup yogurt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

    Finely mince half the onion. Mix ground lamb with minced onion, 2 cloves minced garlic, half the ginger, breadcrumbs, egg, garam masala, cumin, and salt. Form into 12 golf ball-sized meatballs.

    Heat oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Brown meatballs in batches, 2 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate.

    Dice remaining onion. Sauté in same pot until golden, about 5 minutes. Add remaining garlic and ginger, cook 1 minute.

    Add canned tomatoes and 0.5 cup water. Simmer 5 minutes. Stir in yogurt and return meatballs to pot.

    Simmer gently uncovered for 15-20 minutes until sauce thickens and meatballs are cooked through.

    Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Serve over basmati rice with fresh cilantro.
